Assistant Professor is almost everyone's dream job whether it is in the college or in the universities. And NET ( National Eligibility Test) is the basic eligibility for the post of Assistant Professor in the colleges. However, if one has to become the Assistant Professor in universities, he must have PhD form the July, 2021.

Future Scopes of NET/JRF: 


  • You can take admission in the PhD in the prestigious colleges.
  • If you are JRF, you will be provided fellowship.
  • You can apply for the Assistant Professor job in the colleges.

UGC NET is an National Eligibility Test for the post of Assistant Professor in colleges and Universities. However the UGC has confirmed a new rule that the PhD is mandatory for becoming the Assistant Professor in the Universities where as the minimum eligibility for becoming the Assistant professor in Colleges will be remained the same i.e; either NET/JRF or PhD.


Eligibility for appearing in the exam: The candidates who completed their post graduation with the minimum 55%  marks, however students who fall in the category are relaxed of 5% marks. The students pursuing post graduate are also eligible to apply for the UGC NET/JRF.

The UGC NET consists of two papers: paper 1 is general which is same for all the students  which is of total 100 marks and the second paper which is of 200 marks is different from subject to subject.


Difference between UGC NET and JRF?

It is important for the new entrants to know the difference between NET and JRF.

The UGC conducts the NET in total 84 subjects in all over the India in total 91 centers. The marks is of total of 300 marks. And there are two cut offs: one for NET and the second for JRF. For example, the cut off for simple NET in computer science goes around 56 % and the cutoff for JRF is around 65 %. Means if a candidate secure total marks more than 56 % but less than 65 %, he will be awarded for NET certificate and the candidate secure more than 65 %, he will awarded JRF. However the cut offs vary every year and different subject to subject.

NET is simple an eligibility for the job of Assistant Professor in colleges whereas the JRF( Junior Research Fellowship) is where a student who qualified JRF is given as fellowship of around 30000/- rupees per month if he does PhD or Research.

How to have a co- supervisor? What are the conditions to have a co- supervisor? Consent letter for the co supervisor.


A Supervisor or  a Guide is the authenticated person by the university who is supposed to guide his scholar to complete his research work. The supervisor plays a great role for the scholar in the crucial time and even after the PhD. It is the supervisor who is always with his scholars. However, a scholar can also have multiple co- supervisors.

What are the conditions to have a co- supervisors?

  • If the main supervisor goes out of the city or out of the country.
  • If the scholar facing some difficulties in his research work, the scholar can hire a co- supervisor from any university in the country or outside of the country.
  • If there is no mutual understanding between the supervisor and the scholar.

How to find a intended co- supervisor, How to approach him?

You can find list of faculties from the websites of different universities and can see the profile of each faculty. You can read their articles or research papers form the journals. This all will help you to find the desired man who can help you out. After finding the man, you can approach him by sending a simple mail or sending a letter. If he agrees, it requires that the man send a consent letter to your parent university or your main supervisor. After that RDC( Research Degree Committee) will be arranged and the co- supervisor will be allotted to you in a real manner.

What is part time Phd? | What is full time PhD? | What is Regular PhD?

According to the UGC, the PhD must be in regular mode. ""PhD. degrees which are pursued either full time or part time will be treated as degrees awarded through Regular Mode provided these are in conformity with the existing Statutes/ Byelaws/ Ordinances etc. of the degree awarding University. However, the PhD. acquired under distance mode is not permitted"

Part time PhD which also allows the scholar to do job along with the PhD. Full time PhD is the PhD in which you have to embark full time to the PhD until you complete your work or submit your thesis work.

Part Time PhD usually take one year more than the term of Full time PhD. In Full time PhD, you have to remain in the campus for the minimum 3 years or until you complete your work and submit your thesis. Although there are many provisions which can allow you to work from the distant location.

The provisions  are like as:

  • You can hire a co- supervisor from any other university. How to look for a co- supervisor?
  • For example you need to collect some data for the sampling purpose, you can take grant from the university administrator or from your guide and can enjoy your work from the intended location.
  • You can work in a private organization by having a excuse that you have to use the resource of the organization or the company in order to complete you research work.

Scholarships or Fellowships for NET/ JRF candidates | What are the benefits after clearing the UGC NET/ JRF?

There are lots of scholarships or fellowships that you can avail after clearing the NET/ JRF.
If you clear the UGC NET JRF, and you want to avail the fellowship, you need to embark in the research i.e. PhD.
The duration of this fellowship is 5 years. The first three years is considered as junior research fellowship and you will be availed around 30000/- rupees. The further 2 years is considered as Senior research fellowship and you will be given around 45000/- rupees.
